DIY Assistance: Avoid These 5 Home Landscaping Mistakes

April 19, 2018Graham Saunders

Landscaping is an essential aspect of responsible property ownership. Not only do many homeowners take a lot of pride in their landscaping, but many people also really enjoy the time they spend tending to their property.

On top of that, when you improve your landscape in a positive way, you can actually increase your property’s value. Spending as little as 5% of your home’s value on landscaping can actually produce a return on investment (ROI) of as much as 150%.

You have to make sure you don’t make any major landscaping mistakes, however, because they can end up ruining your property and cause some serious financial issues. So to avoid putting yourself in the hole, literally and figuratively, try to avoid these five common landscaping mistakes:

    • Starting too many projects at the same time — Property owners often think they can start and finish multiple projects at once, but that’s just not the case. No matter how big or small a project may seem at first, you have to focus on one project at a time and see it through to the end before you begin another one. If you start too many, you run the risk of never finishing any.

    • Spending too much money on one project — Similarly, you can’t spend a significant amount of money on the first outdoor project that comes to mind. Soon, you won’t have any more money leftover for additional projects.

    • Not working with professional bark blowers — Many landscaping projects involve bulk material deliveries such as mulch, bark, or topsoil. However, if you’re planning on placing some layers of bark on your property for visually appealing outlines or other outdoor features, it’s best to work with experienced professionals. And, no, that doesn’t mean calling for dump truck services that will simply drop a ton of bark at the end of the driveway. Bark blowers can evenly spread a fine layer of bark in the desired area, making your project that much simpler.

    • Cutting your grass too short — Mowing your grass too short might look good for a few moments, but it is actually doing more harm than good. Scalping your lawn can result in a giant bare patch, which could make it a great place for insects and other problems.

    • Fertilizing too much or too little — It’s a good idea to fertilize your lawn at least twice a year, once during the spring and then again in the fall. Keep in mind, however, that you should avoid fertilizing your lawn in the bright sun and always water your lawn immediately afterward.

Good luck taking care of your property. If you want to work with skilled bark blowers here in the Vancouver, WA area, give Barkdusters a call right away.
