3 Important Steps to Take Before Constructing a New Playground

May 9, 2018Graham Saunders

There are currently 132 playgrounds across the city of Portland. As the weather warms up and kids start looking forward to the end of the school year, it’s important that each one of those playgrounds is clean, safe, and most importantly, fun for those kids to enjoy.

If you have been driving around the city checking out some of these playgrounds and you’re not all that impressed, you might want to talk to city officials about building a brand new playground. If you have the means to develop and construct a great new playground, you should go for it.

Whether you have children or not, building a new playground is a great way to give back to your community. You can’t just grab a hammer and head to an open area of the city to build a playground, however; there are a few things you have to do beforehand. Here are some steps you should take if you are serious about constructing a new playground within your city’s limits.

You need to get permission:
There are rules and regulations involving any consecution project within a city’s limits — especially when children are involved. Schedule meetings with city officials and make sure you have all the necessary permits, licensing, and documentation so you can get to work right away.

You need to acquire all the right materials:
You’re going to need more than just plywood and some nails to construct a wonderful playground. You’ll need cedar chips for a base, all kinds of safety equipment, trash cans, cleaning supplies, and so much more. Before you begin any major playground project, make sure you put together a list of all the necessary items and landscape materials you should get and acquire them right away. Keep in mind, for use in playgrounds, a 12-inch layer of cedar chips is recommended.

You need help:
Even if you’re a skilled carpenter, you can’t possibly do everything yourself. If you’re serious about building a great playground, and not just a place for a few kids to pass the time, you need to work with a team of hardworking professionals.
